Use basic shapes and keep it simple for the preschoolers when teaching them about shapes. Shapes are everywhere around us and as a result there are many objects and everyday items that we can use to illustrate the differences or similarities between different shapes.
You can use fun kids songs about shapes, books about shapes, coloring pages, worksheets and real life examples of different shapes. Make it fun and create for the preschool children when learning about shapes.
-focus on one shape at a time
-take however long the children need to become familiar with each shape
-bring in something that is the shape you are introducing for the day
-have children look for things around the classroom that represent the shape you are talking about
-have shape books in the library
-have shape stencils at the art table some days and encourage them to draw the shapes on their own other days
-also have lids to containers and rulers on the art shelf as well
-you can add blocks and toys with different shapes to the toy shelf and building center
Have fun with shapes and go at the pace of the children. The preschool children will have so much fun while they learn about all the different types of shapes and learn to identify them.
