One ice cube tray
Water
Food Coloring
Clear plastic cups (3-5)
Fill the ice cube tray with water.
Depending on how many ice cubes you are able to make, color a few blue, yellow, green and red.
Put the tray in the freezer until the water is frozen completely into ice cubes.
When frozen, gather the children together and have in front of you, about 3-5 clear plastic cups.
Now ask the children to all brain storm together and choose which colors of ice cubes they want in each cup.
Ask which color they think will come from mixing yellow and green, blue and red? And so on.
One plastic cup doesn’t even have to create a familiar color, fill one of the cups with three or four colors.
Now put the cups on a table where the children can see them. As the ice cubes melt, watch what happens to the colors as they mix together.
You can document your results on chart paper and post in the classroom.
*Don’t forget to take a picture of the activity and save it for a picture book to put in the library.
